Welcome!

We are based in the Chevy Chase / Bethesda / Kensington region of Maryland and provide opportunities for boys from ages 11-17 to experience the outdoors, learn outdoor skills, provide community service, and grow through leadership experience in a well-structured program. We've been around since 1919 and our sponsoring organization is The Westlake-Troop 8 BSA Memorial Foundation. William Westlake was a Troop 8 Scoutmaster for 35 years and bequeathed his estate for the benefit of youth organizations in the Washington DC area. For more information about us, including our history, our Girls Troop 8, and the Westlake Foundation, please visit our public website. This operational website is for our BT8 members and access is largely restricted.

Troop 8 will canoe approximately 30 miles over two days, down the Shenandoah River from north of Harpers Ferry to Moulton Park. We will camp overnight on an island near the Route 7 bridge. Canoes, life vests, and paddles will be provided by River & Trail Outfitters. As we paddle this scenic river, we’ll navigate small rapids (class I & II) and ledges as well as traverse relaxing and mellow sections. We’ll wend our way downriver through the Shenandoah Valley and among the Blue Ridge Mountains. Shenandoah River excursions often include bird sightings of blue heron, osprey, egrets, and bald eagles.
