Welcome!

We are based in the Chevy Chase / Bethesda / Kensington region of Maryland and provide opportunities for boys from ages 11-17 to experience the outdoors, learn outdoor skills, provide community service, and grow through leadership experience in a well-structured program. We've been around since 1919 and our sponsoring organization is The Westlake-Troop 8 BSA Memorial Foundation. William Westlake was a Troop 8 Scoutmaster for 35 years and bequeathed his estate for the benefit of youth organizations in the Washington DC area. For more information about us, including our history, our Girls Troop 8, and the Westlake Foundation, please visit our public website. This operational website is for our BT8 members and access is largely restricted.

Action Needed - 2024 Summer Camp - Complete the Summer Camp questionnaire

Posted on Apr 11 2024 - 10:26pm

BT8 Summer Campers - please complete ASAP the Summer Camp questionnaire Google Form that was sent out via email earlier this week.

This is critical to ensure that we can finalize our registration and register Scouts for the Merit Badges they need. For first time campers completing the Trail to First Class program, they will also complete three merit badges (Leatherwork, Space Exploration, and Mammal Study) during that four day program, and have all day Friday free to explore other Camp offerings.

Shooting Sports Outing (April 20-21)

Posted on Apr 11 2024 - 10:18pm

Troop 8 is planning a shooting sports outing the weekend of April 20-21; we will rendezvous at the WCCC Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and return the next day around 1 p.m. The event will be held at the Thurmont Conservation & Sportsman's Club. The Club facilities include campgrounds with potable water and restrooms (with showers), as well as porta-pots around the grounds. Scouts will cook and eat in the usual patrol fashion. The Club will handle the 45-minute safety/training briefings required by the BSA. We will divide into two groups for shooting. One group will be shooting .22 caliber rifles at stationary targets. This is recommended for smaller/younger/inexperienced boys as the .22 caliber rifles do not have any substantial kickback. A second group will be shooting clay discs thrown from a trap house on one of the trap fields. The shotguns involved have a substantial kickback, so this option is recommended for the older/larger/experienced boys.
